Flooding
Flooding is one of the most dangerous natural disasters there are. It has affected millions of people from all over the world. A flood has to do with the overflow or excess amount of water that will immerse the land. This not only impinges on the condition of the land, but a flood can be life threatening to both people and animals. A flood is more likely to happen during certain times of the year. Excess water from rainfall or the melting of snow can influence a potential flood and can provide more of a risk. Flooding can happen in all forms of water environments. This could be in the form of a small local lake or a major river that flows throughout a city. However, a flood is not considered to be a significant flood unless it will jeopardize man made areas, such as cities or towns.
Some of the most dangerous floods in history have taken the lives of many, with the death toll in the hundreds of thousands. In order to prevent such major tragedies, disaster preparedness like emergency management has been put in place to help in these situations. With today’s knowledge and technology, people can have more control over flooding situations. They have learned from the past and will try to prevent the flood from being a bigger disaster than it can be. New dams have been built to control rivers and computer technology has allowed us to monitor water levels.
