Philosophy
In addition to free-standing flood defence barriers,
GL Flood Defence Technologies supply high-performance Demountable Flood Defences
Barriers. Demountable Flood Defences are a temporary protection solution to flooding
as much as the Temporary GL Flood Defence System, but offer much greater protection
performance and range, catering for flood defence heights of up to five metres
and over any length. Civil engineering works are an essential however, as
the very high hydrostatic loads that demountable flood defences have to contain
are transferred directly into the ground via the specially designed foundation
arrangement. The end result though is virtually imperceptible in most cases, and
the full amenity of the site can be enjoyed under normal conditions. The great
advantage of Demountable Flood Defences is that the need for intrusive and sometimes
unsightly permanent flood protection walls is obviated - for many riverside and
coastal sites the advantages of this are clear, particularly where sensitive or
scenic locations are the case. | | |
| | Advantages
of the GL Demountable Flood Defences System- Almost
invisible when not in use
- Rapidly-installed prior
to a flood event - high-profile flood beams reduce installation times
- Modular
construction for easy installation
- Very long service
life with minimal maintenance
- On-going technical
support & assistance
- Extremely high capacity
- up to 5 metres flood defence height
- Very high
quality extruded aluminium construction
- Flexible
design allows post-to-post centres up to 4 metres
- Attractive
capital cost allows favourable benefit-cost scenarios
- Variable
height is possible along the defence line where site levels change
- Robust
non-cellular longitudinal base seal ensures long service life
- The
System can change direction (on a radius), or to specific angle changes to suit
site conditions
- Reversibility and extendability
are features of the Demountable System
- Adaptable
design allows upgrading of the System should future conditions worsen
- The
System can complement traditional defences (for instance by closing essential
access gaps in the defence line)
- The site can be
restored easily to it's original condition
- High
compression of the System is possible via the solidly-constructed compression
system
- Suitable for use on difficult sites (for
instance on sites with special status where a wall wouldn't be tolerated

| Primary
Applications- Linear flood defences to communities,
industrial and commercial premises, up to 5.0 metres maximum defence height
- Perimeter
defences to stand-alone sites and installations
- Closing
off openings in permanent flood protection defences or curtilage
- Containment
applications (industrial)
- Closing off roads and
thoroughfares
- Discrete closures within the external
envelope of a structure

| | | Pre-requisitesThe
GL Demountable System requires in all cases a permanent structure to which the
System is fitted when required. This is typically a concrete ground beam along
the defence line, although individual anchorage points can be used providing that
the ground between is impervious. Demountable defences require further consideration
on points such as advance flood warning times, the availability of manpower on
site to install the system, suitable storage space near to the site, type of and
value of assets protected and the number of times per annum that the System might
be expected to be used. Where it is likely that a permanent defence might require
a lengthy planning and commissioning period, then temporary defences may be considered
to give interim protection to the site. |

Design
Criteria The
demountable system is basically simple and comprises three essential parts - the
permanent anchoring into the ground that remains in place ready for use at any
time, the demountable posts that fit to the permanent anchors, and the flood defence
beams that slot into the posts. The System is completed by vertical channels that
are permanently fitted where the System finishes at each end of the required System
extent. Although the System is demountable and therefore constitutes a purely
temporary defence, it is not re-locatable and can only be used on the site for
which it has been designed and constructed. To achieve re-locatability, the GL
Temporary Flood Defence System would be required. It should be noted that some
applications need planning permission.
ServiceGL
Flood Defence Technologies offer comprehensive advice and assistance to the client
where a demountable flood defence solution is considered an appropriate and viable
alternative to a more traditional approach. This includes a preliminary site visit
and assessment, written appraisal document with options and proposals,
on-going design and technical assistance throughout the design and construct phase,
and post-contract services including training of installers.
There
are many ways that the property owner can at least mitigate the worst flood protection
problems, or at best completely remove flood risk - sandbags represent the most
basic form of self-protection, but technology improves all the time, and effective
new technologies are now available that provide high security with affordability
and ease of installation. |
